PRORA

, since 2004 / artistic cooperation with Marcel Noack

Starting point of the artistic work PRORA is the long-term photographic documentation of the National Socialist political organisation „Kraft durch Freude“ (Strength through Joy) on the island of Rügen. Used since 1950 as barracks of the „Nationale Volksarmee der DDR“ (National People’s Army of the GDR), the impressive building complex is today the largest closed artifact of National Socialism alongside the „Reichsparteitagsgelände“ in Nuremberg. Unlike there, no uniform usage concept was found here in the sense of remembrance of National Socialism in Germany. Precisely because this is not only the „KdF“ seaside resort of Rügen, but also a testimony where Nazi, GDR and German reunification history overlap significantly and its isolated location plays a decisive role in this. What proves to be a difficulty on site has appealed to us as the motive for our artistic engagement. The extensive site, which is characterised by the architectural ensemble, is today synonymous with „KdF“ building, GDR barracks, cultural monument and local holiday spot. Here, history is visible as an interweaving of historical contexts and can be treated and processed artistically.
The individual work complexes created since 2004 are part of a series of exhibitions. The work aims to show that the parallel examination of different individual focal points can withstand the medium of photography as a metaphor for the complexity of specific history. The multi-perspectivity of the PRORA Collection is both a method and an artistic concept. It is the key to a deeper understanding of the historically and socio-political complex issues surrounding the building in Prora.
